I own a car in Chicago. I'm not sure what you mean by being "nickel and dimed" with it. There's City Sticker, State registration, and if you live in a zoned neighborhood, a zone sticker. I pay about $550 per year (yes, year) for insurance. I've never owned a car in New York, but you mean to tell me it's really that different because I'd find that difficult to believe. There are certainly a helluva lot more tolls in New York.

My guess is when people have these types of complaints they are comparing the costs of car ownership in Chicago to some small city, not NYC, LA, SF or DC etc....

Some people are outraged that you actually have to pay for parking. Its like free parking is in the Constitution or something.

The percentage of Chicago that is well served by transit is arguably not all that the different than the percentage coverage of NYC but the massive density of many important parts of NYC, especially Manhattan. means there its ridership numbers are worlds away from any other US city -- Mass transit in New York City - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Car ownership is orders of magnitude more common here -- List of U.S. cities with most households without a car - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uh YEP. Absolutely insane. I think people don't truly understand how much money these things cost sometimes. Although driving is nice, I don't think it's a NATURAL RIGHT, honestly.

1 bedroom in a decent neighborhood? I'd say right now $900/month minimum on up in some of the good ones. $1000/month starting might be more common though. Private parking? If you're real lucky, free..but otherwise probably $50-$100+/month...the parking at my place downtown in a private parking garage is between $180-$215/month.
