Go to the Harold Washington Library, go to floor 8, and get immersed in the Chicago-based Picture Collection for hours. I've been just staring at hundreds of pictures, some xeroxes, some originals, and associated newspaper/magazine articles/advertisements/retrospectives of Chicago. It's an incredible collection. There must be 10s of thousands of photos just of Chicago-related stuff alone.

There was at least one picture of Old Town, say a little south of Wells and North, from a magazine article. Early 70s/late 60s issue. The caption had a funny reference to the "characters" of the Old Town without specifics. Lots of storefront hanging signs in the one picture, none of which I recognize today, though I am aware some of the stores from that era are still around (such as Updown Cigar, where I just got back from!)

There were also some interesting articles from the 1980s and 1990s about Cabrini Green as well.

Otherwise, I don't recall any Old Town specific articles, though I'm sure there were. I just couldn't get to all of them in my time there. Now that I think about it, there were quite a few folders on "Near North Side Street Scenes," so that could overlap to Old Town in that era.

Any urbanophile has got to go to this floor (I also spent some time looking at Ohio cities; not quite as in depth as Chicago understandibly, but still fascinating and there was plenty to see)

There is a skyscraper website with a forum post about this stuff. I always wondered where some of the people got the photos (some are obvious scans out of books). Thanks for the tip! Love looking at this stuff for almost any city..

Is it free to the public?
