Given his interests, I would definitly get tickets to see Second City!!! He would love it if he likes comedy clubs (by the way, I usually like the etc show better than mainstage). You can also do the Signature Room in the Hancock where he can see the city and have a drink. What type of food does he like?

The Signature Room and a river architecture tour are the best ways to see/learn about Chicago. For eating, instead of one of the fancier restaurants (say on the Mag Mile or Rush), I'd say find a place where you'll be living, in Lakeview, so he can get an idea of the neighborhood where you'll be living as well. Where exactly in Lakeview? Cousin's (Broadway and Diversey) was a favorite of ours. There are also a couple of really good Thai restaurants a few block north on Broadway (can't remember the name though). Plus a Nancy's Pizza (my favorite) at Broadway and Oakdale.
