Let's pretend there was a plan to make Michigan Avenue to make it pedestrian only beginning at the turn arounds in front of NBC Plaza and ending where Lake Shore Drive begins. The side streets that run east to west would then go under Michigan Avenue (at least car traffic).

Would you be for it? I actually think it was be an amazing and really cool pedestrian way. Add some more restaurants with beautiful patios. Sophisticated, beautiful and very lively is what I think it would be like.

I know it's a pipedream, hey but we can dream right?

I would make part of it pedestrian but not all of it. People do have a need for cabs for sure too.. I'd rather put something like street cars in there for all of it though. That would probably add to the experience more. It's already pedestrian friendly.

I disagree.

See, one of the reasons the Mag Mile is awesome in the first place, is the massive amounts of people walking in the sidewalk together. Annoying at times? Sure, but mostly, the packed-in density is what gives it its amazing energy.

If you close the streets off to the cars, then that density is dispersed, and what you wind up with is something like a "plaza", or an outdoor suburban mall.

Did you ever see State St. when that was pedestrian only? If making Michigan Ave. is a pipe dream, it's a crack pipe dream - absolutely wrong.

You still need cabs. A lot of people use cabs around there. What I would do is add more street vendors on Michigan ave.

I wouldn't like it. It would make the street seem much less busy which would give it less vibrancy. The critical mass of vehicles and people is part of what makes it special.

Not only is the lesson of the State Street Mall apparently lost on anyone that would suggest the same hideous fate for Michicigan Ave, but the same idiotic scheme nearly killed off downtowns like Oak Park and other towns as well.

The synergy between pedestrian access and vehicular use are necessary component of any vibrant urban style shopping district!
