I live 2 blocks north of here, it's fine with all theusual caveats of not wearing headphones whole wandering the streets late at night, don't leave valuables in sight in your house, car, etc.

Keep in mind that even on a third floor a door can be kicked in or the window off the porch can be accessed. When I was in NYC, a friend had what he called a "police lock". It was an iron pole that was put in place mostly at night when the resident was at home or asleep that prevented anyone from kicking in the door. Have not seen that here. It seems a little silly because what about when you are gone.

If it's the type of pole I've seen you prop it against the door to drop into place when you leave, and locking the door holds it in place. When you unlock the door it kicks the pole up out of the lock allowing you to open the door. They were really popular on in the 70's and 80's (on the East Coast at least). Many apartments I lived in in Boston and NYC had them.

The diagonal floor brace thingy was awesome, I rememmber working with a guy from NYC who had a "hard loft" near Chicago's Fulton St back in the '80s that had one of those things -- NYTimes -- When The Deadbolt Was Not Enough

Apparently the same firm sold those really wicked looking "horizontal brace" type locks that are also very cool looking on lofts: Fox Police Lock (Original Style)
