I think the biggest change is that Boystown is more accepted now by a wider slice of the city, so there are more people from the 'Hood hanging out there than say, ten years ago. But if you walked down Belmont in the early 1990s, you would have seen junkies passed out in doorways, more street people, and seriously tough bouncers outside bars. Some bars had cages and needed to buzz you in. It's a lot nicer and safer now than it was even a short time ago, and the crime stats are relatively low considering the large number of potential targets involved.
Reminds me of an excerpt I read from Don De Grazia's American Skin.

She didn't say how late at night. You're only "right" if it's early enough that the bus is still running yet late enough that traffic on Halsted isn't slowing it down. Otherwise the Red-to-Blue that several people have correctly identified would make more sense. Nice try, though.

Sure there have beens assaults and muggings in Lakeview, specifically around Wrigley and Boystown, but the area is still safe.

I've walked up and down Halsted from Addison to Belmont, and back again, by myself and with friends while out, and none of us have ever felt unsafe, or actually had a problem. The same goes for Wrigley, and walking back and forth between the two areas as well.

Lakeview/Lincoln Park was a Godsend for those of us who went to Loyola, as there is not much to do up on the border of Rogers Park and Edgewater, by comparison. There were more places to go out, eat, drink, etc, and you felt far safer on the streets at night. Even then though, the immediate area around Loyola isn't so bad at night, so I can only imagine what you think of that area.
