um, compared to WHAT? NYC? Detroit? Billings, Montana? London? Chicago is both more and less expensive than many locations, has more and less crime than some locations, and, whether it's a good place to live depends on you and what you consider good

check out the first thread of this forum and read through a few pages and you should get a very basic idea of what Chicago is like

the nicest part of chicago is definetley the west side if your moving here check out austin or west garfield park or a nice suburb like cicero or melrose park

the areas around west madison, van buren and harrison are all especially desiarable a rule of thumb in chicago is to to stay west of western av the area there goes from rooseevelt rd to the south north av to the north and austin to the east

it is a very upscale area that you would like a lot

I believe you will like Chicago more than you think. Some areas are more expensive to live in than others. So it does depend on your budget.

The Goldcoast is the most expensive community in Chicago.

Some areas not to consider over other areas in my opinion would be:

Humboldt Park
Austin
Englewood
Chicago Lawn
Garfield Park
Lawndale-north or south
Logan Square
Wicker Park
Roseland
SouthShore
Chatham
Roger's Park

Once again this is in my opinion and it's based on personal experiences. There may be others not to consider as well.

Some to consider:

Hyde Park
Ashburn
Beverly
River West
Lincoln Park

Some are near colleges and universities-some are not.

There are four or five Il cities listed in the MSNBC list of 100 best places to live. Chcago and Springfield were the two I remembered.

Shut up.

OP: Don't listen to this jagamalope, he's telling you to check out the most distressed, crime-ridden parts of the city.

Why lump Wicker Park in with some of the worst neighborhoods in Chicago? It can't be the price, you have Frat Boy...erm... Lincoln Park listed as a good place to live....

excellent and accurate assessment of our hometown. I am only surprised you didn't direct him to the $2,000,000 town homes and condos at Cabrini-On-The-Greens.
