If I buy a ticket in advance that departs in the evening and it ends up that my schedule permits me to leave earlier, like in the early afternoon, can I just go to the amtrak station and exchange my ticket for an earlier departure?

There are trains at 6:10AM, 8:25AM, 10:20AM, 1:05PM, 3:15PM, 5:08PM, and 8:05PM.

Amtrak's web site spells out the policies at the address: Amtrak - Plan - Policies Imagine that...

You should be able to, but they might insist on you paying the differential if you're going to board a more popular train run ( doubtful)...

Usually it's not a problem. Though technically they protect themselves by not guaranteeing anything.

Thanks guys, I'm going to wait and just try and buy a ticket tomorrow when I get to the station since I'm not sure what train I will be able to make.

You can use the blue Quicktrack stations. That's what I always do.

Hiawatha trains (unlike most Amtrak trains) have unreserved seats, so any ticket is valid for any train. You won't even need to exchange the ticket before hopping aboard the train.

Why don't you just take the METRA out there? I think it goes that far and is probably wayyy cheaper!
