Hi! starting a new thread for my husband. We will be relocating to Chicago/suburbs next year. My husband is an experienced licensed architect, originally from Chicago. How is the job market for architects in Chicago area these days? He is doing multifamily residential and commercial right now. Will appreciate any information!!

I have a few friends that are architects and they have been through some pretty attrocious situations the last few years, lots of firms had major layoffs. The "survivors" have had to got through periods of contract work, parttime work, unemployment. Lots more workers than jobs...

Things are not really better so much as folks have relocated to other areas and/or accepted the fact that trade-offs working in Asia / Middle East for periods are kind of required.

All the architects I know have their own offices. None of them work for a big firm.

It's tough, but that's not just a Chicago thing, it's kind of nationwide. Although the industry has gotten much better than in the past few years, it still lagging. I know a lot of people, inlcuding myself, who left the industry because quite frankly there were no jobs available at all.

I know all the AEC firms are needing people bad, I work for one of the largest ones, and I get offers to go to the other ones all the time. Chicago has a large amount of AEC firms in both downtown and suburbs(DuPage mostly). These firms do mostly commerical and industrial, but I'm sure any other experience would be a big plus to them too.

there are a lot of head hunters out there, they often send things out on LinkedIn, maybe if you don't have a linkedIn profile, it could be a good start.
