It's been years since I rode a taxi in Chicago. Taxis were pretty cheap when I lived there and I'm wondering if they are still cheap now.

About how much would it cost to go say, seven miles in a taxi there?

One of my relatives regularly takes a taxi from North Park to Oak/Clark which is 9 miles. Not sure how much they spend exactly, but last I heard was ~20-25 at night.

I thought I remembered last time I took a taxi last year they also charged for time elapsed and sure enough it says so on one of the taxi sites. So it depends on time of day.
If you're planning on coming from the airport, plan on no less than 20 up to possibly 30

I'd say for 7 miles, it's probably $20-$25 before tip, but remember you get charged every 30 seconds of wait time or whatever, so it also depends on traffic.

Compared to East Coast rates, Chicago cabs are a real bargain...

Same with housing prices...coincidence? I think not.

I have to admit, I don't really know what taxis cost elsewhere as there are only a couple of American cities where you can easily hail a cab any time on most streets (at least North Side and downtown streets).

It's cheaper than than in New York.

From Union Station downtown to E. Lakeview / Wrigleyville area is usually $18 plus tip...with not much traffic, anyway.
