I am a single mother looking to relocate from California to Chicago with my 3 year old. I do not have a job out there yet, though I have been applying for everything I can from here...it's hard to find a job from California though. I will have about $6000-8000 saved before I head out there. My dad will stay me for a month while I look for a job if I can't get any bites from here, but I was looking for any neighborhood info, school info, things like that.

The salary range I have been finding for what I do is anywhere from $26,000 to $34,000. Is this going to be feasible? We can live in a studio for awhile if need be, or I was looking at the Northwest side of Indiana to live.

Thanks.

I wouldn't do it at that salary range and with a kid and no support system here.

30k in Chicago is pretty low… and you will be surprised how fast 8k can go away.

30k is VERY low here especially if you have a kid to support. You aren't planning on getting government assistance, are you?

With a kid, $30k is a massive struggle and without a support system, I'd rethink your plans.

Ok, you must have a good reason for wanting to leave California so badly. I hope you find something.

$30K for a single person is doable. (Not easy, but doable.) I sure wouldn't want to do it with a kid, though.

Chicago isn't as expensive as people think. The only real expensive thing is rent. If you get rid of your car and rely on public transportation, you should be fine. And Chicago is still cheaper than California.

I should add that, while I wouldn't want to, plenty of people do. I guess it all depends on how bad things are for you in California.
