for the last 2 years crime in downtown has skyrocketed and lots of It I have seen with my own eyes. Im not just talking about petty thefts but crime as in shootings and jumping that have led to death. I remember in late spring when a man from another country was on the mag mile and a group of black teens had jumped him for no reason, he then died at the scene. or last sunday a girl was on the phone with her mom and a boy took her phone then shot her while the boy drove away in the car(why did he have to shoot her? you already took her phone! he just had to take another step). For new years I wanted to take some out of town friends to navy pier to enjoy the fireworks then go to hancock tower for dinner. I want to have a good time but Im so scared that something will happen. I love this city its beautiful but I wont stay somewhere where I don't feel safe.

LOL@ this. It gets safer every year it seems, minus those flash mobs that happened for a little bit, which is what you were referring to. They weren't really a problem that I remember last year, and also the foreign guy didn't DIE, he was beaten but nothing serious. It was a doctor from Japan and I remember it well because it happened not too far from where I live. I don't think anybody has died from those attacks.

This seems to be a troll post. I work in Downtown, Chicago and walk around there all the time pretty much every weekday for the past two years. I have never witnessed any crime. If it isn't safe there, I don't know where it is safe then.

I live in the Gold Coast and work in the Loop. I have never seen a serious crime. I see people jaywalking all the time (I do so) and I've seen a few people shoplifting at some stores near me, a few drunken scuffles at 4am around Division (if you want to consider that downtown), but other than that? Never seen anything. Serious stuff happens but not too often.

You lost me when you brought up the fact it was a group of black teens. No reason to call out a particular race.

For what it's worth, I work downtown and feel very safe. If you find the big, scary city too intimidating or dangerous, perhaps it's best to stay in the suburbs.
