Washington Park is its own community area starting at around 51st. Bronzeville is part of Douglas and Grand Boulevard.

$2,500 will get you a really good two-bedroom anywhere in the entire city of Chicago. With that budget, you can basically pick any neighborhood you want.

For that money, you could get a nice bunglow in Bridgeport with a yard, garage, etc.. The commute to Hammond is a breeze, as I live in Bridgeport and do it everyday.

The only downside to BPort that I find is having to plan accordingly for nights out on the town. Aside from the neighborhood spots, there is not a whole lot to keep you busy if going out for a drink is your idea of weekend fun. There is a hipster freindly area on Morgan st which has some cool neighborhood spots.

As far as safety, I have always been told to stay east of Halsted. I personally feel safer living near Armour Square Park than I did by the LP Zoo. The people in Bridgeport generally look out for one another and don't hesitate asking strangers who do you know, where do live, what parish do you belong, etc...

Living on the northside and commuting can be a pain in the rear. I did it for several years. Plan on driving for 35 minutes to get from NWI to 18th St (I94) or Roosevelt (LSD) and then sitting for another 35 minutes to get to North Ave.

Good Luck
