This would actually be pretty sweet, but what makes Times Square a big attraction is also that places are open late there. Hopefully that happens with this riverwalk idea.

I hope so. I really wish the city could extend the outdoor business curfew in some areas. I understand why it's there but I think it could work in some areas - one of them is this area. I don't think it would be that loud anyway. One of my favorite cities in the world, Istanbul, has people eating outside on patios well after midnight. They also have examples of where the Bosphorus is colored by nearby lights and it's quite nice.

I really really hope they can develop the river walk into something good. It's too great of an asset to go to waste, business wise, in some areas.

Lighting the river (aka wasting energy) while simultaneously claiming the city has no money for things like education? Brilliant idea.

Is that because the river has been ****ty quality for so long? I guess it's getting a little better to the point where people may actually consider wanting to hang out near it. It's really a great asset, especially when you have such a good setting around it downtown. It would be great for tourism for sure. I wish the part along the Loop was lined with shops/cafes/restaurants for awhile.

I think it is a combination of the river being nasty and people preferring the lakefront.

I think part (obviously not all) of enjoying the lake front is due to the fact that there's more to do and you can actually swim in it, and more to look at. I always get visions of the setting of the Galata Bridge in Istanbul where they have a handful of restaurants on the bottom level right above the Bosphorus. As such:

In Hong Kong, they have a nightly radio broadcast that synchronizes with building lighting shows to talk visitors through what each building is and a little bit about it. It's broadcast in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Even since I heard of that I thought it'd be cool for Chicago to do something similar, maybe in English and Spanish.

I'd love to see more development along the river! But there needs to be more of a draw than just a light show.
