If it is the train only you will have a better chance of being ok. The bus, oh boy, I hope you don't have to go far on one.

I was taking public transit to work in 1999 and could not get to work for three days.

For example, the Blue Line was shut down completely between Belmont and O'Hare if I remember correctly for a couple of days.

Good luck! We shall see if this storm is what they say it is going to be. If it is anything like 1999 (which it seems like it will be) be prepared for a wild few days!

However trains sometimes run slow...esp. metra trains. The 99 snow storm shorted some el cars but not as bad as the 70ies winter where something like 1/3 to 1/2 the el cars were down. The lake street part of the green line got shut down for a few weeks back in the 70ies.

They have modified the el cars to prevent that from happening so hopefully not. Metra runs slow whenever there is very low visablilty.

I did live in Oak Park in 1999. There was no concept of going to work that next day, especially as I worked in either Lisle or Bolingbrook at the time.

If the forecasts have changed and the snow won't be so bad, then sure people might have to go to work. But if it's going to be 18 inches in one day, that is a nightmare.

I am glad to know there is at least three of us here that actually experienced it and remember what it was like. I think there are a couple more as well.

Your memory proved not to be reliable. You must have been really young right?

I've got cross-country skis and hopefully will be using them instead of working. I spent some time today getting pre-approvals for everyone in my department to work from home on Wednesday. I've been in Chicago for 17 years and this has the promise to be the second real snowfall I've seen
