Hello everyone,
My younger brother is a 20 year old student at University of Chicago. For this upcoming school year he would like to live off campus in a apartment on the west side of Nichols Park. I don't know anything about this part of the city, but our mom has asked me to help check into the safety of the area.

Do you guys know anything about whether this would be a safe area for a fairly sheltered kid from the Connecticut suburbs? Also, what kind of transit options would be available for this neighborhood, particularly with respect to getting to/from the airports? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Almost everywhere in Hyde Park is pretty safe..that's not to say you shouldn't be aware of your surroundings but statistically it's one of the safest areas of town.

Nichols Park is 4 Blocks from the Main Quadrangle and in the center of Hyde Park . There are lots of 'sheltered' and 'unsheltered' U of C students that call the area near the park home . I'm assuming he lives 'on campus' now , so the airport transportation would be the same as what he's using today . Basically , he'll have a slightly longer walk to his classes and the library , and , (once he turns 21 of course..) , he'll be closer to Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap !!..
BTW , Hyde Parkers and U of C students never call it 'Nichols Park' .. the local name is 'Dogsh*t Park' .
