The situation: The tenant asked to break the lease and move out early. Landlord opted to find new tenants. The landlord emailed the current tenants that they found renters from April on and asked for a move out date. The current tenants had movers come mid march. The day after the movers came but before keys were turned over the landlord told the old tenants that the new tenants will not be moving in until April 15th and the old tenants must pay for the april1st- 14th rent.
Is this legal? Didn't the landlord break the lease when they notified the tenants they found renters from April on?

In addition, the landlord is charging the new tenants $100 more in rent per month.

April 15 is April on.
Unless it is in writing with a specific date for the rental payment I doubt anything can be argued about the time frame and amount of rent paid.
The rent for the new renter is the landlord's choice and has nothing to do with the renter who is leaving.
You may want to do a search for landlord/renter laws in your area and read your lease completely, there may be something in writing there.

The tenant asked to break the lease. They are responsible for rent until a replacement is in place. But on a practical side, if they abandon their security deposit, I doubt the landlord will attempt to go after anything else.

the tentant is responsible for the full lease. the tenant should have gotten the landlord to put it in writing the new lease end date, and sign it and even notarize it. without that, the tenant is responsible, no matter was is "said". the written contract/lease rules.
