The Drake--Princess Diana liked it;-) and Oprah has a condo a few hundred feet down the street

The Fairmont is not soo bad either

The House of Blues hotel does not exist in name anymore although its still next to the House of Blues. It is now called Hotel Sax and was redone.

The Belden-Stratford Hotel-in Lincon Park, near the Zoo...Great Lobby-a place Al Capone might go to;-)

With the quad occupancy, I would actually recommend the Embassy Suites downtown (you could also even do 5 or 6 to a room, depending). It's at 600 N State. Here's the website Downtown Chicago Hotels - Illinois / Magnificent Mile Reservations - Embassy Suites Chicago That puts you right by michigan avenue (within walking distance) and 1 block away from the red line el train. It's a very safe area. Some things you might want to do:
Go to Navy Pier. You can check it out at Navy Pier... Checking for Flash. You could actually walk to Navy Pier from that hotel. (Some people will say it's not worth it, but it is a Chicago staple).
There are also the museums. I would take them to the Field Museum and/or Shedd Aquarium.
Going to Chinatown would be nice to get some more culture.
Depending on when you are coming, you could go to one of the beaches.
Of course, you must go to Giordanos or Ginos East for Chicago style pizza (both are also within walking distance from that hotel).
I would also go to the Lincoln Park Zoo. It's free and easy to get to from downtown.
How long are you coming for?

Great info - thank you so much!

I have never been to Chicago - and looking forward to it - believe it or not _I_ have even heard of Giordanos!

Uno or Due are ok too. Personaly, Lou Malnati's and Gino East are my favorite pan and deep dish. But Giordanos is acceptable.

Do not know if they have Gyros out where you are from, but give it a try here. Gyros is far better here than most places.Although I am sure NYC,Boston and Philly etc. must have some decent too.

I'm giving two thumbs down for Uno or Due. I would also suggest searching the threads for activities to do/restaurant suggestions, etc.

The tourists love it.That is why I mentioned it. Remember, they might not be ready for the "best" Chicago pizza. It is usually too much different from what they are used to. Most of them like it somewhere in between.;-) I dont necessarily like Uno or Due, but I know plenty of tourists that say its the best. That is why I mentioned it. Thinking on another level here...

Hmmm, I think they are rehabing it,but I am not sure. Not sure if that is a good place for them ...I think it is better for the college crowd.

Right over the Gaylord.

Being privy to certain information, I've heard that the Hotel Wacker is getting emptied out after January 1 for a major rehab. I won't tell you what it will become, however.

And to the teacher bringing the kids, the Hotel Wacker thing was a bit of a joke. It's one of those seedy SRO-type places that charges by the hour. Though nearly everything else in the downtown area would probably be fine! Stay away from the Ohio House, I guess. And the old HoJo in River North is a bit of a hell hole, though it's probably clean.
