After procrastinating like there's no tomorrow, I finally need to get my Illinois driver's license and tags.

What kind of Hell can I expect? I've read the cyberdrive Illinois website many times. I've got all the documents for the driver's license, I've got the previous registration as well as the title which was signed over to me. I'll bring about $250 in cash to cover all the expenses.

1. Do they give me the driver's license right there on the spot or is it in the mail 2 weeks later?

2. Do they give me the tags right there or do I get a temp tag?

3. Should I assume I'll spend all day there? I'll be stuck at 100 W Randolph in Chicago. I'm really dreading this like a root canal.

4. What's not mentioned on the Cyberdrive Illinois website that I need to be aware of?

I just went to the NW Chicago facility last month and got a new license. It was a surprisingly easy and efficient trip that took me about an hour and a half in total, including taking the driving test. It was a smooth process since I had all of my paperwork filled out and in order. You will get your license right there. I even got a star on my driver's exam :P I didn't have any title transfer process that I had to go through, though, just getting a new license.

You had to take the driving test? That's one thing I wasn't counting on. I haven't taken the driving test since I was 16.

Just the written exam. It's pretty easy with common-sense answers. You also need to know the meanings of traffic signs without their text. It is multiple choice and very straightforward.

Another question I just thought about, do I need the emissions test first, or does that happen after I get my registration. 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser in perfect mechanical condition.

Pretty sure the Illinois EPA has fairly little tie-in with the Secretary of State -- check ahead of time. http://www.epa.il.us/air/vim/owners.html

I'd happily rather go have my newts put in a vice than have to go to the Chicago DMV.

Anyone else call it Secretary of State instead of DMV?

I do, we don't have a DMV here.
