Is it hard to land jobs as Spanish teachers? Not ESL-Spanish, but Spanish as a Foreign Language. I suppose that kind of job would be for high school, but I wonder if that is an area in which there are vacancies right now. Also, is the Praxis I really required for all teaching positions, regardless of what subject you want to teach? I have a French teacher friend who tells me that she isn't that great at math, and she, wanting to move to Chicago, has to be excellent at it for the Praxis I, even though, as a French teacher, she has never taught anything even closely related to math in 12 years.

You have to wonder if it's possible to make a living working as a sub. I'm sure that it involves a few early morning phone calls from proncipals, department administrators, etc, and some willingness to be flexible as to school location. Pay might be pretty decent, but someone would likely need something else on an evening/weekend basis to support oneself..

Bumping thread in hopes of getting more recent information.

I am born and raised in Chicago, currently live on the east coast, but I will be moving back this summer with my fiancee who is a teacher, has a masters and has taught middle school special ed for 7 years (so she understands the role extremely well). She will be looking for a job within CPS, and after a bit of a run around and a lot of initial confusion over IL certification (this is a fuqing racket with all of the associated costs) she currently has her Provisional license and is on her way to her Professional license by the end of May. She is also in the process of obtaining an elementary certification, a reading certification and an LBS1 certification.

My questions revolve around the likelihood of her obtaining a job for the fall, especially considering her special ed experience? Will the apparent strike have a big affect on special ed hiring or new hiring? What is the timeline for when hiring starts?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone who wants to teach in CPS is nuts. If you really love your fiancee, insist that she teaches somewhere else. Trust me. You won't regret it.
