My husband and I are moving to Chicago. Currently we are in a Detroit Suburb, So weather conditons I expect to be more severe closer to the lake, but we are familiar with the cold.

To the point, we cannot spend over $700 a month in rent (this is not including other bills, only rent) and I have done some searching, and found apartments in that price range, but I don't know if I am looking in a safe area, or one we would feel comfortable in. from reading other posts, it sounds a little like Detroit in that areas of chicago tend to be race-dominated. While I am not opposed to living in a mixed area, Im not sure I'd feel comfortable living in a primarily african or hispanic area. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

you are stretching it trying to find a safe one bedroom for that price, frankly. if you could up it to $850 you might be sound as a pound.

I think $700 without utilities can be found. List some addresses and I will let you know.

It's doable. I did a quick search on Craigslist. It took me 2 seconds to find this: (773)549-0813 1-bed rm. (broken link)

That's a one bedroom WITH heat in a super safe neighborhood. They call it Lakeview, but the intersection they name is North Center just south of Lincoln Square. Might be a crappy place, but the price and safety are right.

You can find something in safer neighborhoods for that. Check out Lincoln Square, Andersonville, Irving Park, just to name a few.

$700 for a 1-bedroom in a safe neighborhood is doable in the outer neighborhoods of the city, or maybe $750 including heat. Also, the only largely Hispanic neighborhoods where there are white/Hispanic tensions are Humboldt Park and Pilsen. There are neighborhoods all throughout the Northwest side where whites and Hispanics live literally side-by-side without any issues at all save for the occasional old-schooler who resents that his old neighborhood is changing. Do you have to live in the city or are suburbs a consideration? Where will you be working, or do you know yet?

$700 for a one-bedroom in Andersonville? Since when? That was unheard of when I lived there 8 years ago...
