Our son is taking a job either in Waukegan or right around there and wanted to know what the closest largest city is some what by the city? He does not mind driving within 30 min or so if he can find a nice area to relocate to. Also, what city in the greater Chicago area has good water and air quality...does anyone know? Been looking on Sperlings and I can't seem to find a place that has high water and air quality.

Thanks

For short commute and a town that is both more "upscale" than Waukegan AND well known for being attractive to young people your son should focus on Libertyville.

Closest "kinda" large city would be Kenosha I guess... though it's really no bigger than Waukegan. But it's a major upgrade nonetheless.

When he says "some what by the city" does he mean Waukegan, or Chicago, or Milwaukee?

In terms of population, Waukegan is the 9th largest city in Illinois. None of the surrounding suburbs even comes close. If he wants a nicer 'burb, I'd suggest Highland Park, Evanston, anything with a Metra station. Driving isn't necessarily his best option. Air and water quality is pretty much the same all along the lakefront.

Except Kenosha which is slightly larger and a lot more vital, though still not exactly a highly sought-after location.

That of course depends an awful lot on how close his work site is to the Waukegan station and/or if he has other transportation options between the station and his workplace that match up with his work schedule.

Mind the coal-fired power plant in Pleasant Prairie and the combined coal/oil/natural gas plant in Waukegan.

I'd probably look into Libertyville, Highland Park, Evanston, etc. Libertyville is a simple commute to Waukegan. Highland Park isn't too bad, but the town itself will probably be too boring. Evanston is the closest town to Chicago, but can be a bear of a commute to Waukegan. But at least it still cuts the heavy city traffic out of the equation.

Evanston is probably too far, really the best bet if the work location is inside Waukegan is to try and have a drive of 10 miles or less -- there are ALOT of commuters that live in Lake Co and the way that pharma firms / healthcare companies / financial services have built facilities with limitless free parking mean LOTS of congestion...

Reverse commute from Chicago via Metra is never partcularly fast and with the pattern of rail traffic on the UP-N line it is really difficult to recommend that as on option...

Other towns in Lake Co are sort of lacking in appeal to young folks. As nice as palace like Highland Park is for families (or retirees...) it can't hold a candle to Liberyville for young singles...
