A lot of peoples perceptions about the safety of Chicago are formed from the media. The media tends to sway how violent it really is. Don't get me wrong there are some horrible neighborhoods but for the most part Chicago is a lot safer then people think.

Has anyone ever accidentally moved into a bad neighborhood? In my experience it seems like it would be pretty hard to move into one of Chicago's truly bad neighborhoods and not know what you are getting into. However, when I lived Atlanta, I moved to East Atlanta Village, which was promoted by both my co-workers and "Creative Loafing" (ATL Village Voice type paper) and all my stuff got stolen within 6 weeks of moving into my rental. After it happened everyone I knew in Atlanta was like "well duh, it's east atlanta village, dummy," including the co-worker who had rented his property to me! Is there an equivalent of this in Chicago? A gentrifying neighborhood that is still sketchy?

I think it would be pretty easy to do if are just looking on Craigslist, don't know much of anything about the city, and are on a budget. I've had friends ask me about nice places before, but they were in meh neighborhoods. Not overly dangerous but not the safest areas. I have a friend of mine who told me when he first moved here, he moved into a bad part of Logan Square when it was bad because it was cheap and he had no idea about the city.

I have friends and co-workers in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and elsewhere who have had to deal with break-ins. My brother got mugged really bad in Andersonville. Someone got stabbed in front of my West Loop apartment a couple weeks before I moved out to the burbs. Crime can happen anywhere. I'd be shocked if someone lived in any Chi neighborhood for a couple years and wasn't similarly exposed to crime.

That said, I don't believe it's fair to say the nice neighborhoods in CHI are any more dangerous than the similarly nice neighborhoods of NYC, ATL, SF etc. The chances of becoming a victim of a crime -- especially a violent one -- in a "nice" Chicago neighborhood are exceedingly low.

But folks moving to Chicago from rural or suburban locales -- where a stolen bike sends shockwaves through the community -- should be cautioned of the possibilities.

I've lived in Chicago for about 25 years and had a propane tank stolen from my grill once.

I've lived in the Gold Coast for 5 years, and have spent time in many, many neighborhoods and haven't seen any major crime happen before my eyes yet in any neighborhood. Even my times walking deep in areas like Humboldt Park for a little while, nothing.

I've seen someone with a big stab wound but it was after it happened...riding the Blue Line. I don't think that counts though since I didn't actually witness the stabbing. Just a lot of blood. I have very few friends who have reported anything like break-ins too. I have a few friends who got their places broken into in Humboldt Park (the neighborhood, not the community area) in the last few years but that's about it.

Now if you're talking about stuff like shoplifting, public drunkeness, etc and people trying to sell me drugs then yeah I've seen some of that.

Hahaha, and I bet it was someone you knew. All people can do is lock their doors....use common sense and be cautious when you are living in a big city. I bet you a lot of break-ins are by people not locking their doors or leaving a window open or something of that nature. Be street smart even with your home.

I completely agree with this.
