Just curious if others are having issues renewing their city stickers. Daughter did not receive a renewal notice in the mail. She tried the search function to renew online and it cannot find her car. She is a college student and has out of state plates. I don't know if that complicates things, but she also searched by VIN. She then waited in line to renew in person, only to have the system crash when she was next in line. Are others having problems renewing too?

I have not had problems, but I have IL plates and have lived in Chicago for quite a long time.

Perhaps she entered the VIN incorrectly, or the wrong registration state? If this isn't her first city sticker, perhaps the information on the previous one was incorrect. I remember reading a thread recently where someone went to get a city sticker with out of state plates, and the person at the currency exchange accidentally recorded their plates as Illinois plates. They didn't notice it until they got it home.

I had no problems renewing. Got the renewal notice, did the online renewal, got the stickers in less than a week.

I suggest she take all of her information and head to a currency exchange. There is an additional fee ($6.50?) but she likely won't have to wait in line.

Thanks, I will let her know about the currency exchange. I don't know where she went. She has had a sticker since last July. Last year they dinged her by charging her a late fee even though she got the sticker less than 30 days after she moved to Chicago becaise it was more than 30 days after her lease started. She moved in about a week after the lease started so she missed the deadline by a few days. We had proof of the actual move-in date, but they didn't care. Not whining about the late fee, just a word of warning to other people moving to the city.

I'm going to guess that she didn't go to a currency exchange. People do seem to be unaware that there are multiple options to get a city sticker. Here's an article about the long lines on the "last day of sales" on 6/30:

The lines were the same way at the place around my house and I just don't understand it. I've been ordering mine online ever since that option became available. Is the city just not advertising this as an option or what? The complaints people are making in the article are valid but geez. I also order my plate stickers online and any city services I need. It gets done in a matter of days to a week. Yes the city can be a pain to live in but when they try to make things convenient for residents, it seems nobody utilizes it. Which leads me to believe there is either an issue with the city properly notifying folks or people would just rather suffer the long lines and complain. OP, this is not directed at your situation as I think it may have to do with your daughter's plates being registered out of state so she probably would have had to go in person anyway.

I just tried looking it up with the VIN. It was not found. I am sure the out of state DL and plate complicates things or maybe there was a typo in the VIN when it was initially entered.

I believe the VIN is on the city sticker (or the receipt that is issued with the sticker) from last year, so compare it to the one on the car and see if it matches. Also make sure that the state matches what is listed on the city sticker.

Thanks. I will do that. I was using the VIN on a copy of the insurance card that I have which may not match what is on the sticker.
