My boyfriend and I will be moving to Chicago in 5-6 months. I am looking to see which suburbs/neighborhoods are safe and affordable. Our rent max would be 1,000 $ and would like to be able to hop on the train to go to chicago easily. I wouldn't mind being as far as 10 miles away. I was wondering should I try to look towards the lake or go west of chicago? I'm just not sure which is more safe?

Thanks!

Are you looking for a 1 bedroom or a studio? Will you be bringing a car or two? Will you be working in Chicago? Are you looking for a walkable neighborhood (i.e. go out of your place and be within walking distance of some eateries, bars, entertainment, etc) or do you not care at all?

There is a separate forum for suburbs, but for the city we can help you here.

You could get away with 1,000 for rent, if you look at Jefferson Park. Perhaps Garfield Ridge? Those two are pretty affordable neighborhoods in the city. The latter being on the Southwest side. Suburb wise you could try Park Ridge, Norridge..

You can also find 1 bedrooms in that range in places like Ravenswood, Lakeview (a few places), Lincoln Square, Edgewater, Bridgeport (more like 2 bedrooms for that price), Buena Park (in Uptown), Logan Square (a few places), Hyde Park, a few of the neighborhoods near Midway Airport like West Lawn, Clearing, etc, Irving Park, etc. You'll find some stuff in Jefferson Park, Edison Park, and Norwood Park too but not as much as you may think.

For that price, my son recently rented a 1 bedroom in a fairly posh part of Ravenswood. It is a walk-up in a courtyard building, hence the discount. You just have to have patience and get to know the area you want to live in.
