Man shot in Washington Heights | Voices

The CTA employee went to Little Company, where I heard about it from a friend.

That sucks - but that's not what I'm talking about. Do you have real data for your claim that an innocent bystander is shot every week. Not stories - but actual data showing this. Stories are cool but they don't mean that these things are actually happening at a certain rate (for example).

No more 'courtesy' in gang shootings

A 2009 University of Chicago study found that just those killed as innocent bystanders account for 1 out 5 shooting victims. And I said at least one month, not one a week, which I thought was a pretty conservative estimate.

Yeah sorry you did say once a month. You also left out a key part of information in the article. They are talking about youths, not just anybody. Youths make up a decent percentage of the homicides, but not all, so that 1 in 5 is possibly even less. Still too high, I agree.

This was also from 2009. It would be interesting to see if it's gotten better in recent years. The problem with guns versus knives is that if you miss your target, you may hit someone else innocently. With a knife, that's a lot harder to do unless you're slashing at them in a crowd.

That was NOT what the OP (or anyone else) was asking about.

WAIDtransplant,

If the offer they made is agreeable to you/ better than all the others, I vote that you take the job. I don't live in Chatham, but I used to work at a PT clinic there some years ago. If you do take the job, I would suggest maybe driving to work in the beginning and just walking around to get a feel for your public transit route, maybe during lunch time...if you have time for a lunch. And then when you feel a little more settled in, take CTA. Your fellow CTA riders can be sketchy and dicey looking for sure, but it just depends on your personality in terms of whether or not you can get used to it.

Wikipedia says Chatham residents are "overwhelmingly middle and upper income African Americans."

It also says the median income was $37,809 in the 2000 census. Is that per capita income or household income?

EDIT: The very Wikipedia article you just linked does say more, I just noticed. On the side of the screen, it says that median HOUSEHOLD income in 2010 was $32,057.

How is that middle and upper middle class? If 2 people in the household work 2 full time minimum wage jobs, they have more money than the median household income in Chatham.
