I grew up on the Northside and went to Lane Tech for H.S. in the late 90's. My husband and I have lived out of state for over a decade now and want to move back to Chicago.

We homeschool our kids and are interested in possibly buying a condo in Hyde Park. Funds are limited, so that means options for neighborhoods are too. Ideally we'd live in North Center/Lincoln Square, but it isn't in the cards for us right now.

I'm wondering, what's the area East of the Washington Park, South of 51st, North of 53rd, West from Woodlawn like?
Is Washington Park a safe place to take kids to?

Another area of Hyde Park I was looking at was around Harold Washington Park, but again, I'm wondering about safety.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Great. Another white person with no money, forced to consider living with black people, and wondering how safe it is.

An I the only person constantly offended by this type of request? Especially when one of the areas being discussed (Harold Washington park) is likely safer than where they want to live (North Center/Lincoln Square).

They're both perfectly safe. What are you looking for, a house or a condo? I really don't know if it would much much cheaper than North Center/Lincoln Square. The areas you're talking about a very nice areas.

Wow! "Another white person"? I'm Latina, thank you very much.
What does that have to do with the safety issue?

Area around Harold Washington Park is "likely" to be safer than North Center/Lincoln Square you say?
Fabulous! You just answered my question. I really didn't know, and that's why I was asking.

No because west of the park is a hellhole.

The area west of Washington Park is indeed a hellhole, and the area around Harold Washington Park is pretty good. They're different places.

I also wouldn't live just *east* of Washington Park if I could avoid it. Just west of Woodlawn, there are some beautiful streets, but the streets closest to the park (Cottage Grove, Drexel, Ingleside) are iffy around 51st-52nd.

My point was that I don't find it out of line to ask if a neighborhood is OK if it is adjacent to a very violent neighborhood.

There's a very useful tool that no one seems to know anything about. It is....

Chicago Police Department CLEARMAP - Crime Incidents

Maybe the mods should do a sticky? "Before asking about crime in a neighborhood type the address into this easy link and see if there's crime" LOL!
