I thought it would be interesting to map out the percentage of foreign born people in Chicago by census tract into a heat map. It also includes people born in US terrorities such as Puerto Rico and Guam. This comes from the 2008-2012 census estimates. The greener something is, the higher the percentage of foreign born peoples are. The redder it is, the lower. Brown is in the middle. The highest tract is in Armour Square, Chinatown at about 66.5% of everyone being foreign born.

Great job with that map! It's really interesting following Milwaukee Ave. North, and seeing numbers in the 10-15% range suddenly jump to 30-40% as you get into Logan Square. That matches my day to day experiences. It's also interesting how many of the worst sections of the South and West Sides have numbers that are below 5%, or even below 1%. They're the lowest numbers in the city by far.

Thanks. Yeah it's pretty interesting. The diagonals coming from the Loop (with a little buffering for the north) has a pretty consistent string of it.

I'm actually surprised that one in Armour Square took #1. I was expecting something in West Ridge to be #1. Also there is a tract in Streeterville at almost 42% - surprised by that too. The one to the south of it is 30% which isn't amazing but still could be worse.

Some other statistics - 1,213,094 (around 45% of the population of the city) people live in tracts where the foreign born population is at least 25%.

I always love your maps. The C-D Interactive Data Map can create an identical map, but I like your inclusion of tract numbers.

Interesting and IMO unsurprising.

No neighborhood is an island unto itself, at least not in the long run. These neighborhoods need to figure out how to bring new blood into their communities, because if they don't, some other group will.
