I was curious about who steals bikes and if they are normally armed. I've always had this fantasy of catching someone stealing my bike and kicking their ass. Of course if this does happen I don't want to get stabbed or shot.

They are usually crack heads or sadly, fellow cyclists.

A cyclist would already have a bike so why would they steal someone else's? Also, most cyclists are professionals, not theifs.

They steal it for the parts or just because they don't believe some random person should have a better bike than they do. Ask any bike mechanic about it. Most serious cyclist dudes are actually a-holes. Anyway, to answer your question they might be armed with a bolt cutter.

"Most cyclists are professionals"? What kind of myopic false stereotype is that? Have you ever been on a Critical Mass ride?

A lot of cyclists who aren't professionals steal bikes for parts, a lot of high school kids in rougher parts of town steal bikes and sell them for money. Most thieves won't have weapons, but they will be scrappy fighters who almost certainly have more street savvy than you do. I've never fought someone who was actively stealing a bike, but I have been in a fist fight with someone who grew up in Humbolt Park stealing bikes (among other things) and I don't think someone who isn't experienced in street fighting would come out on the winning side of such a fight unless you seriously got the drop on them and caused serious injury in the first strike.

Most people who steal bikes are people who love bikes in my experience. My guess is most are not armed with a knife or gun.

They'll be armed with screwdrivers and bolt cutters.

If they weren't armed how would they steer?
