"City of Big Shoulders" by Robert Spinney is the best one volume history of Chicago I've read.

"Chicago and the Old Northwest 1673-1835" by Milo Quaife is an excellent history of frontier days around Chicago---Wells, Kinzie, DuSable, Hubbard and those guys. Did you know that the Chicago Pottawatomie Billy Caldwell was the son of the infamous Irish redcoat William Caldwell who whipped the Kentuckians at Blue Licks in 1782?

And ole William Wells, he was a real pistol, his life would make a great movie. A Kentuckian captured and raised by the Miamis, married into a powerful Miami family and advised Little Turtle. He went back and forth between the Indian and American worlds; fought as an Indian against the Americans and as an American against the Indians. Ended up killed in the Fort Dearborn Massacre and his heart eaten by Pottawatomies and Kickapoos but he took a few with him.

"The Chicago River-An Illustrated History and Guide" by David Solzman is good.
