I currently live in Rochester NY and myself and my girlfriend are thinking about relocating to Chicago. I'm a school guidance counselor and my girlfriend is an elementary school teacher. Are there any teachers or counselors out there who work for Chicago Public Schools (or surrounding districts) and what has your experience been like (in getting a job, workload, students, etc). Thanks

Did you search the forum? There are multiple threads on this. From what I hear it's really difficult to get teaching jobs in the Chicago area unless you specialize in special ed or science.

The only area with significant demand for teachers in CPS are people who have the credentials to to teach ESL. The requirement to have "100 clock hours / 3 months" experience is a high hurdle to jump -- Requirements for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

It is undoubtedly a good idea for folks to have such experience but simple math says that anyone needing such experience is going to have a hard time also paying their bills during a move...

The list of "approved courses" from the Illinois State Board of Education also shows a disturbing trend -- majority of pricey "for profit" / online schools have jumped through the hoops to get on the list while many excellent schools from other states just have decided not to participate in Illinois lucrative / buercratic nonsense... http://www.isbe.net/licensure/requir...coursework.pdf

That is only the preapproved list. I had coursework from two non profit out of state schools that transferred in with no issue. The list hardly shows a disturbing trend just because it has courses from GCU and Phoenix.

The list is a "who's who" of for-profit institutions -- Walden University, Western Governors University Salt Lake City, UT , Capella University Minneapolis, MN, Grand Canyon University, American College of Education are ALL the kind of places that make more from desperate folks taking our loans for overpriced courses than actually teaching anything. U.S. targets for-profit colleges that saddle students with high debt - LA Times

I am sure that the folks that run schools in Chicago like DePaul, St. Xavier, Loyola, Northeastern, and others feel like vomitting when the ISBE manages to leave their fully accredited teacher education courses off this handy online list and no doubt the campaign coffers of some elected officials have been enriched by checks from these online / for profit places... THAT is the "Chicago Way"...

Do you know the process for being put onto that list?

You will get quite a bit of negative feedback from people that were unable to successfully navigate the system that is CPS. First and foremost Chet gave solid advice when he mentioned getting additional endorsments wheter it be LBS1 or ELL. My initial cert was Secondary Social Studies. When initially job hunting I had almost zero leads for Social Studies but several for Special Education.
