When I was that age I was in moon boots, snow pants, "choppers" and a bomber hat.

I can see teenagers being stupid about what they wear but am surprised when I see little kids in the wrong gear. Also adults, like at the bus stop there's always a handful of dudes freezing to death in their starter jackets. At that age who cares what you are wearing?
Maybe kids back then were wusses? Are we experiencing de-wussification?

The Weather Channel

It's supposed to be in the 30's for the next 10 days. That would be a heat wave in Chicago lol.

It made it to near 30 today and it almost felt like spring compared to last week. You could literally feel the extra moisture in the air........pretty sad when you start celebrating temps in the upper 20's! Such is life in Chicagoland!

I live further up north, Stockholm is still south Sweden, Compare it to cities in the north like Kiruna or Luleå, its like i would compare stockholm with houston.

Here we go again! Chicagoland schools closed today because of the cold.

Why aren't Wisconsin schools closed today? Apparently, they still realize that they live in the Midwest and that life doesn't come to a grinding halt just because it gets below zero.

Just called and made an official complaint with the district. It is a gorgeous, sunny day here. People are out & about, roads are bone dry. There is NO REASON for these schools to be closed unless there are heating systems or transport vehicles that are non functional, which there are NOT. My kids play outside in weather not much warmer than this without issue, I'm sure they could handle getting on & off a school bus and walking in & out of a school without turning it into a life threatening situation. Just because they have weather days to burn doesn't mean they need to, especially when the kids have already been out 2 days this week because of a holiday and parent-teacher conferences. Absolutely ridiculous!

Or maybe because a bunch of Wisconsin parents cart their spoiled little children to school in warm vehicles, or have bus access, unlike many Chicago children who get to school via public transportation/their feet.

Yeah, that's it. Getting a ride to school or having bus access makes a kid spoiled.
Ever heard of coats, hats, gloves and boots? I suppose kids who have those are spoiled, too?

Crawl back into that hole, chief. Don't you know it's cold outside?

You are woefully ignorant to the fact that many children do not have the luxury (yes, luxury) of getting a warm ride to school. We have nothing more to discuss.

I am actually quite curious about the average Chicago winter gear couple decades ago. I am seeing awful amount of children totally inadequately dressed - as if their parents never heard of gloves, woolen caps/hats. Plenty are wearing just the super-thin spring jackets and you can see from their posture they're really freezing. And, the bluish color of their legs just confirms it.

Granted, New Jersey (where I've been last 2 winters) is much, much warmer than Chicago (though, it's actually not as warm as Florida as some make it seem !), but when it's 12F and a kid walks to school (from home, not just the car) in shorts and sneakers, it makes me sick.
And I know for sure it's not the money, as the area isn't so poor (avg family income in that town is $150k-$250k), so they surely can spend $100 on proper boots.

Now, I may be biased, as I spent majority of my life in a region in Europe where the normal winter temperature is around 0F and usually -10F (which actually starts to get a bit chilly with a strong wind), so we were used to the fact that you wear proper layers.

Thus, I'm more inclined to naming it stupidification, rather than de-wussification...
