What buildings could you not see the Chicago we have today without? for me it is the Crain's Communication Building. the building is perfect for the corner of the park, and i cant imagine just a boring box in its place. i especially cant see the night skyline without it. the light up diamond is a main focal point in the night skyline

Though I can think of a few.... including Willis, Hancock, Ion, Wrigley and Tribune. I still think the Trump Tower stands out front and center of downtown... just so many streets and vistas... it stands out.

Aside from newer ones like those listed above...

The Manhattan Building. Said to be the oldest skyscraper in the world based on its construction type.

The Carbon and Carbide building at Wacker and Michigan. I love the Gilt Age look of it, and how different it is from the rest of the skyline. The gray-green stone and golden top are perfectly complementary. It looks like it belongs in a Bioshock game:

I also think for a new building ...On Museum Place stands out too. On a trip to Chicago last August. On a boat tour into Lake Michigan. Tourist on the boat had to ask about this building to the announcer?
He said " Oh its just Condo's" LOL

I would really miss the Board of Trade at the end of the canyon if it were gone. It is so beautiful, yet sort of intimidating...it kind of looks down on you. I like it.

Others I would miss:
The Metropolitan Building, Palmolive Building, 900 North Michigan, and the Harold Washington Library. And of course the Water Tower. What would Chicago be without the Water Tower?
