Based on what you've said, South Loop seems like the best compromise. You would be close to work and have easy commute to nightlife to the north and south. As others have said, Hyde Park is a cool area. If you are going to work at U of C you could consider living in Hyde Park for your first year, so you'd be close to work, and then decide after becoming familiar with the city.

Definitely recommend South Loop if you can find a place in your budget, especially if you can find a place that's near the #6 bus (an express bus that goes to Hyde Park). Columbia College (one of the largest art schools in the US) is in the South Loop and has a ton of theater majors, so you'll be around that. It'll also be the shortest commute, outside of living in Hyde Park.
