I'm looking for information on the neighborhoods of Dunning and Portage Park. We are looking to buy a SFH and these areas seem to get more for your money. Schools are a concern but not for awhile (we have a 12 month old) and I know the schools can change in this time. I'm a bit more curious about Dunning as I have a few friends in Portage Park and they seem to like it. Thanks!

We're moving in to our condo in Portage Park next month, so we're obviously very happy with what we saw. To be perfectly honest, I am surprised at what PP has to offer as far as amenities go. One of my co-workers just moved in to a condo in Dunning; he says it's very quiet, but that's what he wanted. I'm not sure if you work downtown, but the River Grove metra is somewhat nearby the SW corner of the neighborhood. Otherwise, it's a pretty tranquil, suburban feel. I think the history with the old insane asylum is pretty neat.

Dunning strikes me as the kind of neighborhood for people who want a mostly suburban lifestyle but have to live in the city due to residency requirements. Or maybe for those who work in the near northwest suburbs and don't care about downtown transit access, don't have to worry about schools, and want the lower property taxes of the city versus the suburbs. For those who have kids and for whom the quality of public schools is a potential concern, I don't see a lot of upside to Dunning. Same goes for the western fringes of Portage Park. Once you get to the eastern half of Portage Park, now you're getting close enough to city amenities to possibly make it worth the while.

I'm also somewhat concerned for the long-term stability of that area as the old pattern of "blighted inner-city neighborhoods surrounded by safe and stable outer neighborhoods" has been slowly reversing over the last couple decades and the "blight wave" continues to propagate outward, particularly to areas that are not well-served by rapid/commuter transit.
