I know a few acquaintances who I suspect are gay. They have both been divorced from women, but talk and give off signals they are gay. I'm not sure why they would hide it though, because I don't think anyone who knows them (not sure about family), would care. I was under the impression that in the city, homosexuals are all out and proud of it.

1. Who cares
2. You're under the wrong impression

Even if you are correct in your assumptions which are just that, you are going to get that everywhere. Even now when being gay is more accepted than ever before, there are many people who think they just cannot come out of the closet. It is not a Chicago thing by any means.

Extremely common. The north side is in fact overwhelmingly gay.

Please! Let us not bring up Jim Thompson, Michael Bilandic or Harold Washington.
Just don't.

Seriously? If someone is hiding that they're gay, especially on most of the north side, it has to do with their personal life and not the city. There's so many gay people in Chicago all over it's not even funny and many don't hide it.

If they're not saying it, don't say it for them. Leave 'em alone aka my your own business.

Some gay people don't think it is anyone's business. I personally don't think it has anything to do with hiding or the location where they live. I just had to tell a straight friend that I was gay a few months ago due to the subject coming up and in todays world it really doesn't matter. Why should gay people feel the need to disclose sexual orientation before the issue needs to be addressed.
