What do you think about the neighborhood near Winnemac Park in Lincoln Square? It's kind of a long ride to the loop on the brown line from that far north, but you have the huge park, decent bars/restaurants in Lincoln Square and North Center, decently priced homes, and it's pretty safe as far as I know. I'm thinking about buying some real estate in the area, and was hoping to get some input on the area from others. What do you all think? What are the pros/cons of the area? Anywhere else you would look instead?

The area is great. Transit to the loop from the Damen brown line isn't THAT bad, and if you need t be there much quicker, you can walk to the Ravenswood Metra and be there in under 20 minutes. I feel like the walk from Argyle or so to Lawrence isn't bad at all, but your mileage may vary. I wouldn't hesitate to buy there if I had the cash. At this point, the neighborhood is completely gentrified, so real estate reflects it.

I lived there. It's a great area. The Lincoln Sq. strip on Lincoln is great (bars, unique restaurants and stores). The "Plaza" is incredibly charming. Schools are a bit iffy, but I'm not an authority as we moved to the burbs before my girls entered school age. Bell School in N. Center is well regarded though (note- not Lincoln Square).

It's somewhat pricey, but less than N. Center or for the most part, Lakeview, due to the fact it's 6-7 miles from the Loop.

If you buy in Lincoln Square, I'd be confident it's a pretty safe investment.

The con: I don't think I can afford it anymore. I lived there 18 yrs ago before it was gentrified, now the rents are twice as much as what I paid, but I'm not making twice as much as I was then.

I think the schools are good. I know I'm the "only white person" who is not trying to get my son into private schools. My son is a student at Mcpherson and I have nothing negative to say. But I'm the kind of parent who believe parents share equal responsibility with the teachers to educate our kids.

As much as I would love to have faith in the spirit of parents like g_o_m the data just does not support such positive thoughts -- MCPHERSON ELEM SCHOOL: School Profile When a school falls BELOW even the poor CPS averages that is an indication that something is just not right -- maybe the school is not getting the resources it needs to deal with large numbers of Limited English Proficency students, Low Income Students or Students with Disability / Individualized Educational Plan -- MCPHERSON ELEM SCHOOL: Student Characteristics

Socially Lincoln Square is Top Notch -- my sister (who has no kids) lives there and basically whenever we visit the range of nice dining options / night spots / entertainment cannot be beat.

Apparently Lincoln Square has been "discovered" in the past couple of years. No one said "boo" about Lincoln Square a few years ago on CD, but now it has become the "gem' that's been hidden under a rock for generations. I've visited a few times during my Chicago excursions, and I would absolutely consider it for a place to live..

I'm pretty sure Lincoln Square has always been mentioned when people discuss nice Northside neighborhoods on this forum.
