Hey I have a 5 hour train layover in Chicago. Anything good (and safe!) to do around this area?? Any input would be helpful!

It's near/in downtown - 5 hours is plenty of time to get out and do something. it depends on what you like to do?

There is actually a pretty fun bar in Union Station. I wouldn't spend five hours there, but decent to kill an hour or so. On Friday after work they have a free buffet.

If it were me, I'd store my stuff in a locker at the train station and then walk straight east on Adams and head to the Art Institute.

Anything good? Dude, this is downtown Chicago, of course there is lots of good down there. Store your bags in a locker and go for a walk. The river has been dyed and there is a parade going on today! If you can't go to Ireland for St. Patty's Day, Chicago is the next best place to be! East takes you to State St., Michigan Ave. and finally, the lakefront. West you'll be headed into Greektown! Have fun! I always had to work when I was down there; not much time for seeing the sights but there are plenty!

Head east on Adams St or Jackson St and you could see the Willis Tower, the old Chicago Board of Trade building (seen in key scenes of The Untouchables and The Dark Night, among other films, and the Art Institue. Then Millennium Park is just across the street from the Art Institute, and if you walk back west toward Union Station on Washington you can see the Chicago Cultural Center, State Street, Daley Plaza, City Hall, and the Civic Opera building, not a bad collection of things to see in 5 hours. You could also stop somewhere along the way for a meal, perhaps German food at the Berghoff on Adams, or one of the restaurants in the Art Institute, or pop just north of the River into River North for a wide array of choices, or eat in Greektown, just west of Union Station.

I'd take the water taxi over to Michigan ave and then take the architectural boat tour.
Then check out the Bean and maybe the Art Institute.
