I'm moving to Chicago in June, and am so excited! Is there anything that I have to do immediately upon moving? And by this I mean things like getting a city sticker for my car. If there's not, great, I just like to be over prepared. In case it is important, I'll be living in Lincoln Park and working in the south side. Thanks for the help!

Where are you moving from? That will probably help gauge a few things. Have you ever lived in a big, urban or partially urban city?

I'm moving from Ventura, CA, about an hour and a half north of LA. Grew up in the suburbs of St Louis, so this will be my first time living in a city.

I have an aunt in Ventura.

You'll need a city sticker for your car once you switch registration to Illinois.

You need to get an Illinois license too...will probably need to take a written exam (that's what I did and most people I know too).

Just to add to this, the written exam is not difficult. It is multiple choice and then there is a matching section where you have to match the sign outline to the sign name (IE Red octagon with a white edge around it = stop). It takes about 10 minutes and then they score it right in front of you.

watch a couple of videos on how to drive in a big city. how to conduct yourself in a 3way, 4 way or even 5 way stop signs. i hate people who move to Chicago and just absolutely fail at driving in it!

also google how to make a left turn through a busy ave or street! i hate when some lost-looking driver is blocking traffic just so s/he can make a turn!!

couple of other things:

- CTA buses will cut you abruptly, so make sure to give them way if they need it
- a lot of foot traffic, so whenever making a turn make sure there aren't pedestrians walking the street
- a lot of idiotic out-of-towners that don't understand they can't just cross a street when a car is coming. beware of them
- also some unaware bicycle riders that think it's okay to (almost) cut a car off in order to make their turn!

The above is most prevalent in these areas: Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Andersonville, & Wrigleyville.

The Illinois Rules of the Road for drivers is on line. Understand Scott's Law. We have laws about texting and driving, speeding, and school zones, and littler, and moving guns into the state. The fines for some of these ae EXPENSIVE. Many of Chicago's non-city roads are 8 and 10 lane wide. Know where you are going before you hop on it. If you want practice on these roads - very early Sunday morning (before 6am) is a great time as the traffic is minimal until around 8am.

This advice is funny. Assuming you know how to drive, you will be fine.

Join a group/activity to begin meeting people outside of work. There are lots of social co-ed sports leagues if you're into that, or could do a class at Old Town School of Folk. The sooner you begin developing a new social network, the easier the transition will be.
