I am going to be working at U of C, but want to live in Oak Park. What would this commute be like, and how would you do it? Thank you.

You'll just have to drive. There's no good way to do it otherwise. You could take the Green or Blue Line Downtown and then hop on the Metra going South, but the timing would be difficult and it would just take forever. You might as well just drive in on the Ike (290) and then head south on the Dan Ryan (90/94) after going through the "Circle Interchange". You would then take the exits for Lakeshore Drive and go all the way south to Hyde Park. Or you could stay on the Dan Ryan and exit at Garfield, driving through Englewood.

Your other option would be to take the Green Line the entire way, but then you'd have to get off and on in Englewood, which is one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods. I wouldn't want to be sitting there at a bus stop every day of my life. Once or twice, maybe, but definitely not every day!

Take the Metra to the loop (20 minutes). Transfer to the CTA shuttle bus #192 which takes you directly to the UChicago Hospital (30 minutes, leaves every half hour).

Steve Levitt, economist and writer of Freakonomics, lives in Oak Park and is a U of C faculty member. That'd be cool if you could carpool with him.

Co-Author with Steven Dubner

Steven Dubner is an Alumnus on my college and I met him at an event once. Good dude, and I don't want him to get left out.

Yeah, but he doesn't live in OP, so malchik can't ride with him.

Everyone should read that book! It's one of the most fascinating books that I've read over the past few years.

It would be an easy commute from Oak Pk to Hyde Pk. You would just take 290 (Eisenhower Expwy) to Lake Shore Drive South and exit at 47, 51, or 55th streets. Traffic is heavy in the morning however on 290 but once you get to LSD it will be a breeze. Without traffic, you could get there in probably 20-25 min but you'll need to allow an hour with traffic. Oak Pk has an excellent school system if you have kids.
