Hi I am currently live in Phoenix, Az but I am thinking about moving to Chicago this summer. I was wondering what neighborhoods are best, and how good the public transportation is in Chicago.

Depends on your budget. Lots of good neighborhoods in the city.

Downtown/Mich Ave you would pay 200 bucks a month for parking, a big one bedroom would cost 1200-1500 bucks. Great place lots to do, cinema, shopping.

Gold Coast-- not so big a fan. I like the North mich ave area. The Gold Coast is the most expensive. Its probably the most New York you'll get in Chicago. Trendy, overpriced restaurants where you get little food.

Lincoln Park is nice more yuppieish lots of bars, restaurants, parking is harder to find or on a pay basis. Especially nice is Lincoln Park West and the Fullerton Area. Great views on the lake and the zoo. Beautiful houses.

Lakeview/Wrigleyville is nice too -- Wrigley Field , again restaurants and bars, good deals on digs

Avoid 4000 North to 4800 North along the lake its a dump.

Andersonville is great (5200 north), fairly cheap, and very easy to find parking

Sorry I didnt answer your question. You wanted to know about public transportation. Well there is the El many stops along the way easy to get into the city. Do yourself a favor and live near the lake and the El. It is the best area to live. However, Chicago is a very driveable city. You will find the convenience of having your car something you miss very much from Phoenix. Waiting for the el in very cold weather is not always pleasant either. There are buses too along the lake right to downtown.

In the city, I would recommend Wicker Park, River North, or Lincoln Park. All 3 are beautiful neighborhoods with good schools, but you may find Wicker Park more affordable. As far as suburbs, I recommend Oak Park, Elmhurst, Lombard, Westchester, Evanston (north). Forest Park also has good elementary schools, north of 290/ They also have a new High School that is being ran by the former principal of the Illinois Math and Science Academy
