Oh I wanted to know. And thank you. I will most certainly be there.

If you're a beer aficionado, here are the top beer-bar destinations in Chicago:

The Hopleaf. One of the most respected beer bars in the country, and it has the added bonus of being pretty accessible from your new home: about a 15 minute walk, or hop on the Clark Street bus and be there in four. The downside is the incredibly uppity service (at least at the bar) that treats patrons like an annoyance rather than the source of their livelihood. Good Belgian food too if that's your thing. Get there before 5 on weekend nights or you'll be waiting for a seat.

Michael & Louise's Hopleaf
5148 N. Clark Street, Chicago

The Map Room. Located in the fabled Bucktown neighborhood, there's a bit more of an indie/boho crowd here than at Hopleaf. Also a well-known destination among beer snobs nationwide. They do not serve food (save the Saturday afternoon buffet -- free!) but they do allow carry-in and delivery from outside restaurants. A free pool table (donations encouraged) is also a nice draw.

Delilah’s. Something of a punk bar that refuses to gentrify in a thoroughly gentrified neighborhood (Lincoln Park). This place is definitely different than your standard serious, buttoned-down, contemplative beer bar. In fact, the beer almost seems like a secondary concern behind the primary purpose: MUSIC. And be it live or DJs, it's invariably loud and frequently obnoxious. Yet even though the beer is not necessarily a primary focus, they still have a bewilderingly good selection, one of the best in the city. They also have a pretty steep whiskey selection too if that's of any interest to you.

Quenchers. Another place that refuses to gentrify. It has live music 6 days a week, so if you want to drink your beer in relative peace, best to go in the afternoon or early evening. Selection is stronger in bottles than on tap, but still a must-visit for any beer fan who finds himself in Chicago. Some interesting pub-grub options too, such as buffalo tater-tots and tater-tot pizza. (Maybe they're Napoleon Dynamite fans?)

2401 N. Western Avenue, Chicago

Yard House (http://www.yardhouse.com/location.asp?id=11 - broken link). To be honest, I hate this place and it's part of a national chain (and the atmosphere shows it) and it's overpriced, but they have some 130 beers on tap. The catch is that it's 130 beers that are all fairly easy to find in any self-respecting beer bar in the Chicago area; Yard House just happens to have them all gathered under one roof. (This is where the other 4 places I listed are different: they all have several beers that will only be found at the most dedicated beer bars.) All those caveats aside, the sheer number of tap handles earns Yard House a spot on this list.

Goose Island is definitely back in the game with their brown cardboard "small batch" four packs, like Mattilda, Demolition, and Pierre Jacques. These are MUCH better than their old standbys! Though there are times that nothing beats a cold 312 from the tap...

Of course, I married one.
How about "You just can't disagree with 773". No? Alright.

And they're still only one quality step above Three Floyds' regular offerings. Do a side-by-side of Goose's high-end/specialty offerings versus Three Floyds' high-end/specialty offerings and Three Floyds kicks 'em in the face. I'm just not a big fan of Goose Island beyond its "institution" status. Adequate? Sure. A national contender like Three Floyds? Not even close. Three Floyds is in rarified air with the likes Dogfish Head, Bells, Alesmith, Stone and New Glarus -- easily a top-ten brewery in the States.

Yeah, it's 773. Some apartment/condo call boxes require that you have a local number so that you can buzz people in without charging the management company a billion dollars.
