Yes, I know that too, but I'm also not here for a straight 30 days at any given time. I'm traveling back and forth between here and my previous residence (although I'm mostly here). Regardless, my car is still registered at my old place, and my understanding is that I can't get new license plates or a city sticker without proof of residence. I have nothing to prove I live in Chicago until Aug 1, no lease, no utility bill, nothing. If you have suggestions, I'll take them. I'd love to get it out of the way now, rather than waiting for August to roll around.

It's not 30 straight days. It's 30 days period within a year.

You don't need proof of residence for a city sticker unless you want resident permit parking too. Technical legal requirement aside, if you're moving onto a zoned street or you have out-of-state plates, you're better off waiting until you have proof of address and/or an IL plate because they'll charge you an additional service fee (I believe it's $25?) to get a new sticker with your updated plate # and/or zone #.

I'm not moving into a zoned permit parking area, but I do currently have out of state plates. I'll be getting IL plates in August when I can prove I'm a resident. Sounds like I should stick with my plan of waiting until the first week of August for the city sticker, as well.

Does anyone know if one can pick up the guest residential parking permits at any location that sells the year round parking permits or is it only at select locations?

Doesn't do the OP any good who's moving here today.

OP, I don't know if you can buy temporary zone permits at any retailer that sells city stickers. But you should be able to get some at your ward office or a city clerk's office with a copy of your lease and a government-issued ID. Not sure where your ward office is, but the nearest clerk's office would be the one on Addison Avenue just west of Western, in the shopping complex just east of the McDonald's. There's a parking lot there for added convenience.

This is what I always heard as well. However, the city clerk website clearly says now:
All Chicago residents using his or her vehicle in the City must have a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker, regardless of where the vehicle is registered. Failure to do so can result in a minimum $200.00 ticket and additional fees. Tickets can be issued every day until vehicle is in compliance with the Wheel Tax.

How do they know the person is a Chicago resident? What if you are visiting? You surely don't need a city sticker in that case. So how would they know until you actually registered your car here.

Right, but, as I stated in a previous post, I was informing the OP that he would be fine on a temporary basis, when he first moves here and settles in (less than 30 days). My post wasn't intended to state that this is a long-term solution, only that he need not worry about going to get a city sticker for his rental car or his own car on the very first day that he is here. I stand by what I said. He's not going to get a ticket the moment he arrives and parks in Chicago, assuming that his car is still registered elsewhere, which it presumably would be.
