And actually, Ravenswood is a great neighborhood for kids. It will just cost you! I'd love to have a nice Lincoln Square house with money left over for private school... Sigh...

I know. I live in Lincoln Square. I'd love to be able to stay here as I go into the marriage-kids-property phase of life, but that looks tough.

This is a bit off-topic, but the mention of Bowmanville recalls a question that came to my mind recently.

How do you pronounce "Bowmanville"? Is the "Bow" pronounced as in "Bow Wow" or as in "Bow and Arrow"?

I'm a non-native Chicagoan and I've only seen the name in print, never heard it spoken, and I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Christmas bow. Right? I'm pretty sure that's correct.

Yep, that's how you say it. It's the last affordable part of Lincoln Square---because it's far from the Brown Line.

Even though they weren't officially a part of Ravenswood, they tried to jump on that bandwagon. Just like realtors will call places "Lincoln Park" even north of Diversey. Just like I've seen people call places well into Albany Park "Lincoln Square area". Etc. etc.
Ok. For some reason I was not sure if you were agreeing with me at all or refuting me.

And "Wrigleyville" well, we just wont go there and try to explain what area that actually encompasses now (or at least what realtors are trying to say it is) lol

I think Budlong Woods is far cheaper than Bowmanville.

But for a long time, Lincoln Square was a small neighborhood nestled within Ravenswood. The "Official Community Area", however, which is bigger than the old Ravenswood, is called Lincoln Square. You have to be careful not to confuse "Community Areas" with the less formal neighborhood boundaries, which only exist unofficially.
First of all , there were no community names when Ravenswood and Lincoln Square were starting to be populated. Sure, Lincoln Square could have been termed part of the Ravenswood area at first, but as both grew into distinct areas they became termed seperatly. When the annex occured, Lincoln Square and Ravenswood were seperate areas. Thus, when the community map and names where established, LS and Rav. were seperate. Since LS had more apartment buildings, a higher population, far more commerace, and a main road runing through it (Lincoln), more street cars opposed to Ravenswoods industry and higher amount of single family homes. Lincoln Square became the community designation. I would have no problem if they named it Ravenswood, which they did not.

The term Ravenswood for the whole area was created by developers and real estate agents that had no more authority to call a huge swath of land "Ravenswood" than the realtors of today that are trying to call Buena Park and even parts of North Center, "Wrigleyville" now!

I am not saying you are completely wrong at all however with your original post.

Ravenswood was an area established slightly before Lincoln Square. Both were small areas and are (neighborhood wise) small areas. I am not confused with community names. I know that most of the neighborhoods that are included in the "Lincon Square" community existed far before the designation and annexation.

All I am saying is the official designation for the community has been Lincoln Square for over 70 years and that is what it should be called until (if ever) it is changed.

If you live in the true Ravenswood, you live in the neighborhood of Ravenswood, which is in the community of Lincoln Square, located in the Township of Lake View, contained in the City of Chicago, part of the County of Cook in the State of Illinois, United States of America!

When I lived in the Lincoln Square community, I actually lived in the Budlong Woods neighborhood former home of the old Budlong Pickle company. When people would ask where I lived, I would say Budlong Woods. If they did not know where it was, I would try to explain that it is in the "Lincoln Square" community. Sometimes to just save the time of explaining to someone that could not grasp the concept we are talking about in here of communities and neighborhoods I would just say Lincoln Square to save time and frustration.
