Is this an Illinois ban or just in Chicago? If so, I suppose one could shop in the suburbs and still get their plastic bags.

(Once I heard the plastic bag ban was coming down the pike a year or so ago, I started saving them bc they are still the best way to pick up dog poop)

As others have mentioned Harvest Time and it's sister store Edgewater Produce are the best for produce, even meat and some really good ethnic items as well. I like Mariano's a lot and Jewel is fine for certain items, but not meat or produce. I like going to Holzkopf for meat and Isacc and Sons Fish for seafood. I also love Gene's in Lincoln Square.

I've been going to Holzkopf's for years. Bornhofens too before Mark took over. Love that place and the guys behind the counter.

This just seems silly. Why ban plastic bags?

Or maybe they will provide paper bags i hope. this sucks. they are trying to be environmentally conscious but i re-use those bags for many things. now i dont know what they are going to do to pack your groceries. The cashier was telling me sunday that i better buy enough of those $1.49 bags before other customers buy them and they run out. this is so retarded of an idea. Thank you Tree-Huggers idiots.
It's not because of tree huggers but because companies refuse to recycle them, or people refuse to. More companies because it's cheeper to just produce new ones. And plastic bags are not 1.49$, canvas once are. They last a wile and if they rip you can get a new one free of charge at Whole Foods. Even from a different store. Even the cloth ones are only 2$. Plastic ones that are meant to be used few times are only 30 cents. Paper bags might cost 5 cents. They did I this in Seattle. Most people just buy paper.

I've noticed this too. At least in my area most of the employees of Mariano's seem to be young high school or college aged kids, and most are very delightful, especially when compared with Jewel employees in my area.
