Hi i'm thinking of moving to chicago. I've lived in Seattle for the past 2 years and spent the other 18 years of my life growing up and living in fayetteville arkansas. I'm going to move this summer and have some choices i've narrowed down to: Probably either Chicago or san diego. Looking at pictures of suburban chicago reminds me of growing up in arkansas (without the small mountains lol) and looks so comfortable, as the city looks fun. I would probably be going to U of illinois at chicago, so i'm not sure where in the area i would be living. I also have the choice to go to san diego, which looks inviting for its great weather, semi low crime, the ocean, palm trees, and cali way of life(which i enjoy from spending time in cali). However, i have never actually been to Chicago or san diego. Having lived in arkansas and seattle, i can appreciate the heartland way of life, the city life, and the coastal life. Could any give some advice on Chicago(crime, things to do, pace of life, weather, everything!), San diego(weather, pace of life, things to do, palm trees!) or a comparison of the two? Any and all information would be awesome, give your advice, opinion, and facts! Also if any have been/come from arkansas or seattle, let me know your experiences! thanks guys! (i also like pictures )

I think you should come visit Chicago and go to San Diego before you make any decision. All the advice in the world will not help you enough to make a decision on these boards if you are not going to visit first.

There are plenty of threads on here for you to browse about this city and San Diego.

After you browse around a bit or have more specific questions and have narrowed things down better, I would love to help you more.

Thanks for the nice post, i've read a lot on both and just can't decide which is for me. Since you are in chicago it'd be best to ask you specifically bout it. Hows the crime in Chicago in general? I know areas very but some places are just generally dangerous. Is it that way in chicago? Is it very pretty in that part of illinois? Natural beauty is important, having gotten used to the mountains and puget sound, very very green here. Is it that way in chicago? Any comments and thoughts would be awesome thanks!

I think you could stand to do a bit more research on your own. You don't move to Chicago to experience nature, mountains, rainbows and dolphins. It's a beautiful city, but not in that sense. If that's the type of beauty you're looking for, San Diego is the better fit.

I've done plenty but i want first hand experiences. A lot of the people from chicago that have responded on here seem to be a bit bitter and um....perhaps could loosten up a bit? lol Not all there have been some nice responses, but i'm asking a question here. Doesn't mean i haven't researched but you can research all you want and a place will still be different from what you think. And natural beauty isn't just mountains and such that is just an example. High strung jeez any more laid back people from Chicago have advice or comments?

Also, one major technique of researching is by talking to people, interviewing etc. If you attend college you'll learn that ;D

Your experience with scenery and temperate climates suggests you would be better off in San Diego. Chicago would be too much of a shock.

I am from Arkansas though, and looking at pictures of the area around chicago remind me of home.....without the ozarks and the climate in ark is more similar to Chicago than seattle or SD...so who knows I still wanna know about the crime lol anyone who wants to give their opinion on crime in general or in certain areas let me know
