Studies show that there is no distinct advantage to starting earlier OR later --

Age of Entry to Kindergarten and Children

...age-of-entry effects were small in magnitude and dwarfed by other aspects of children’s family and child care experiences suggests that age at starting school should not be regarded as a major determinant of children’s school achievement..

results suggest that the academic success or failure of children whose kindergarten enrollment is delayed, early, or on time depends on sociodemographic factors as well as the ages of the children in the same class (e.g., child’s age relative to his or her classmates). Policy discussions about age of kindergarten entry or changing cutoff dates should include consideration of factors that influence parental decision making, as well as a child’s age relative to his or her classmates.

No they didn't. They followed the district's age guidelines.

No they didn't. I wasn't even the oldest in my class, much less a year older than everybody.

They probably should have held back my sister though. She struggled to graduate 2nd in her class of 500+. If they'd held her back she certainly would have had a shot at the Valedictorian spot.

You still haven't told me what opportunities I missed by not being shoved into school when I was still 4 years old. You've just made up a bunch of crap about my parents being cheaters and how it's like, unfair & stuff.

Lol, when's the cut-off in your district? You said you were almost 19 when you graduated, which leads me to believe that you were born in October or November, and the cut-off is usually in December.

"Usually in December?" According to whom? In Illinois, the cutoff is September 1.

After the cutoff. Which is why I didn't start school when I was 4.

Why are you so obsessed with how old I was in school? You're kind of creepy.

Alright, I'm sorry. Your parents had no choice. I just know a lot of parents who redshirted their summer and fall children(including mine), when there was a winter cut-off, and it frustrated the living cr*p out of me. Well, I'm sure they would have sent you at 4 if they could have.

Thanks for the input everyone.. so after we met with the Principal again we have reached a sort of compromise. He is still in a 2nd grade class but they switched him into a different class with 2 teachers, both of whom we find much more *ahem* appealing and sympathetic. They assure us it is the right move and he will get extra attention. It seems the class is geared more towards 2nd graders that may need a bit more attention either because English is their second language or they are behind for whatever reason. Today is the first day of class I guess we'll see how it goes!
