Meh, these park budgets aren't unreasonable given the number of studies that seem to show a vast number of beneficial correlations.

Probably what deserves your ire a bit more are the slices of the federal budgetary pie that far dwarf anything the US would ever spend on parks or any domestic infrastructure, but might not really be getting the kind of returns that are benefitting us (or maybe just people in general) all that much.

Illinois is a net giver state to the Feds. Unlike most of those southern red states. I'm happy we got a tiny piece of the federal pie for this.

While that may be true for the whole state, things get murkier for the City of Chicago.
Which States Are Givers and Which Are Takers? - The Atlantic

The relatively high poverty rate of Chicago ensures that quite bit of Federal dollars are already flowing here through General Assistance -- Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

The trend line for jobs, that generally mean people are paying taxes, vs food stamps, that come from Federal revenues, are sharply diverging here --

The persistently high unemployment rate suggests that Chicago would do well to direct more precious federal dollars toward activities that will help more folks achieve economic self sufficiency -- Unemployment Rates for Large Metropolitan Areas

The federal funds used for the park aren't available for the use you suggest.

I wonder when the suburbs like Naperville, Wheaton, Orland Park, Libertyville and Mt. Prospect will allow the construction of affordable housing within their precious limits to alleviate the terrible economic segregation in the region that you are oh so concerned about.

How about your BS?

Do you seriously expect there to be anyone in either party in Washington DC that would have had to have their arm twisted harder to fund job training programs in Chicago than an elaborate waterfront park with its own allegedy revenue generating music venue?

I went out to the ribbon cutting today and the park is really nice, but not nearly as fancy as I expected for all the hype surrounding it. They have a lot of fun events planned, it seems, but I don't think I'll go back for a while. I'm not a park person. There also wasn't the crowd I expected.
