Yeah, I don't blame Chicago. I've been all over this world and only mugged twice, I consider myself lucky.

And yes, lol I just moved here.

Again, thanks everyone for your thoughts, its much appreciated.

I wish you a speedy recovery, dragoro. A positive outlook helps, too.

I just remembered a friend of mine that got mugged in Hyde Park coming home from her first day of work in Chicago... She's been here for five years, and that was the only time she's been mugged. Hopefully it will be your last too, dragoro!

I just mugged Saturday a block from UIC's medical campus. Two black guys about 5' 8', I think they were brothers. One guy had a knife. I ended up fighting them both, I ended up getting my wallet back. Im from a little town, and I just got accepted to NW for medicine, and now I am seriously thinking about not going to NW because of this. I also called the police, TWICE, and they never came. It happened on California Rd. roughly 2-3 blocks from UIC. Would the police have came if i told them that i thought i killed a guy? One of them was laying there when I ran away.

Sounds like a wild night.

The UIC Medical campus is in a pretty rough part of town (obviously) where this stuff happens more than it should. In contrast, NW's medical program is in Streeterville, which is high rent and pretty safe.

Crime can travel, but I'd walk through NW's med campus late at night a million times before I'd walk by UIC's, if given the choice.

Hope you're ok. If it makes you feel any better, your experiences aren't "the norm" (in that I've been in Chicago for five years and have never been robbed... knock on wood. In fact, I know far more people who haven't been robbed than have... )

All of that is to say that I would try not to let this sucky event sway you.

As Carolina said, UIC is surrounded by rough neighborhoods. Northwestern is not. It's an entirely different scene. Muggings do happen in Streeterville and along the Magnificent Mile because it is a very crowded area with lots of foot traffic, nightlife, and tourists. But it is definitely one of the safest parts of the city.

If you were on California Ave., you were more than a couple of blocks from the UIC campus. A mile can make a big difference, and at California you were in one of the highest crime areas in the city. Count yourself lucky you did fare worse.

As someone else said, California is almost a mile west of the U of I Med area, and is very rough. Be careful over there, the area by U of I changes quickly. I hope you're doing ok, and sorry that that happened to you. Also, as others have said, the area by Northwestern is much more upscale & safer.
