Hi,

I am from Minnesota and was wondering if someone chould help me with purchasing a vehicle in Illinois.

Will I be paying Illinois taxes and title fees or just the car?

How much is the car tax percentage and tittle fee in Chicago vs Illinois if I had to pay that.

Money is no issue here I just want to prepare for my purchase.

My budget is no more over $15k and it will be for a Used car.

Why buy a car in Illinois vs MN? The vehicle I want is easier to find with a better deal and lower miles Compared to the ones for sale in my state.

*example* MN 2008 vehicle with over 120,000 miles $15k vs IL 08 under 80,000 miles same price

Thank you

There is some info on the Illinois Cyberdrive site, but it does not specifically cover your exact situation, which I suppose is forgivable as we are not in adjacent states.

The basics are you MUST get the seller to supply you with a Bill of Sale and Title and you need to keep that with you until you register in Minnesota. The seller needs to "de-register" the car, we still have paper forms for that -- http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/pu...ons/vsd703.pdf

Apparently if you did both sides of the transaction in your home state you and the seller could do something similar online -- https://dutchelm.dps.state.mn.us/dvs...portOfSale.asp

Here is your state's FAQ -- https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/for..._the_facts.pdf

I have friends that are "hobby car people" and they typically bring a set of plates with them from their home state (maybe their "old beater / daily driver" that they left locked up in the garage at home), as well as appropriate documentation to show everything from the source of any funds they have to proof of insurance and titles to the car that "match" the plates. The last thing you want / need is to get pulled over by some "by the book" trooper that thinks you lack of documentation makes you some kind of criminal mastermind...
